GRAMMAR 3
ORDINAL NUMBERS
• We use ordinal numbers to tell the dates.
• There are two ways of giving the date in English.
Month + Day: January 25 – January the twenty fifth
Day + Month: 25th January – The twenty fifth of January
• Years are normally divided into two parts; the first two digits and the last two digits.
2016 is divided into 20 and 16 so we say twenty seventeen.
1984 = nineteen eighty-four 1990 = nineteen ninety LEARN STEP BY STEP
2012 = twenty twelve - two thousand (and) twelve
2021 = twenty twenty-one – two thousand (and) twenty-one
• We ask: What date is it today? / What is the date today? / What is the date?
We normally add a "th" to the end of a cardinal number to make it an ordinal number, but there are some
exceptions.
